A DATE WITH DESIGN:
Welcome to "A Date With Design," a new feature on the blog dedicated to introducing & showcasing local and online entrepreneurs & small business owners, but more specifically, their thoughts about the impact of graphic design in their businesses. The goal is to show how graphic design plays a role in each business and industry, as well as how it can benefit a client in unique and various ways. Everyone featured is asked the same six questions.
Let's get this party started...
INDUSTRY: Event Planning & Management
FEATURING: WellsGarbe Productions (WGP)
WPG is an Ottawa and area event planning and management company focusing on event planning from start to finish for corporate functions, vendor expos, trade shows and fundraisers.
WPG continue to be inspired by the desire to bring local small businesses together in various event formats. Their goal is to showcase local business people in unique, niche, trendy yet affordable events so that they have the opportunity to grow their businesses and reach more people.
What is the role graphic design plays in your business?
For our business, graphic design plays an important role as we have several brands that require a unique identity but at the same time we are trying to preserve the common look and feel that WellsGarbe Productions wants to have for each show. Graphic design can play a significant role in ensuring that our needs are met. We require creative designs for each of our brand logos, as well as customized graphics for social media feeds, marketing and promotional material and other collateral for each of our shows.
Do you think it's important to invest in quality graphics? If so, why?
Definitely! Our logo is the first thing that our clients see and associate with for each show. We invest in quality graphic design to ensure that the logo for each brand is an accurate reflection of each show we produce and one that stays in people’s minds. We want our clients and customers to be able to see our logo and immediately know it’s a WellsGarbe event.
If you could learn to do a portion of your graphics yourself (DIY)
while still maintaining and elevating your brand, what would you most like to learn?
If I could learn to do our own graphics, I would want to do just the simple things like revising or updating an existing banner (i.e. with new dates and times); taking our existing logo and creating new promotional flyers or postcards. Simple things - but I would leave the creation of logos or designs from scratch to the pros!
If you could provide advice regarding graphic design/branding to someone
starting a business in your industry, what would you tell them?
Hire RACHELA ! (True story). Ha ha! No really, hire a professional to get you started. Having a professionally-designed logo and starting pieces allows you to put your best foot forward right from the start. Do your homework when choosing a designer, and make sure they have the experience and the know-how to get you what you need.
What are some exciting projects or events coming up that you want us to know about?
