I turned the big 4-0 in June. It was quite the emotional ordeal. I did a lot of panicking, soul searching, some more panicking, comparing myself to others, reflecting, and then finally came to grips with it - because I pretty much didn't have a choice. What I did have a choice on was restructuring a few things in my life. Continuing to coast along as I had been was no longer serving me well and hadn't been for a long time.

The first thing I decided was to just take it easy this summer. I vowed to lessen my workload and not stress about the next big job or attending every single networking event in town or beating myself up for not writing that blog post or sending out my newsletter yet again {I'm horrible at keeping up with it as you can see}. The silver lining is that you don't ever have to worry about me spamming you!

I also decided to do a little traveling. My motto this summer was "Have laptop. Will travel." I found myself in Amsterdam, then Paris on my 40th Birthday {oooh la la} which really helped me transition into a new decade. I mean, how could it not?

Soon after I returned from Europe, I had another opportunity to visit my family and friends in the Southern USA. So off to Wilmington, NC and Savannah, GA I went. What a fun experience to be on a road trip with my dad!

All this traveling and being out of my normal day-to-day was just what I needed to think and reflect on what I wanted in my life and in my business.

Sometimes you need to get out of your everyday routine in order to see just what needs changing!

Before I go on to tell you how and why I'm changing my business, I think you should know that my clients are some of the best people I have had the pleasure of meeting and working with. I'm pretty lucky when I can say that a large majority of my clients have become some of my closest friends!

However, this past year I found that in the normal routine of working from my home office {alone most of the time} I felt there was something missing. I seemed to be lacking my usual enthusiasm, creativity and passion. But on the days when I had my intern or a 1-on-1 design tutorial booked, I felt excited, refreshed and bursting with creativity.

This was definitely my AHA moment!

It was then that I realized I needed to be doing more teaching and mentoring. Seeing the sense of accomplishment in my students as they showed off their final creations brought me so much happiness! I needed more of this to balance out my business and bring some zest back into my life. Don't fret though - I'm still taking on and working with my awesome clients!

{Drum roll please...}

I'm beyond excited to say that I've done a little restructuring and with the motivation & support of a very dear friend of mine {and client}, I'm offering the first of many in person and online workshops...

The Small Business Graphic Design Workshop will take place on Tuesday, October 3rd from 9:30am-4pm at La Charette Meeting & Event Space in Ottawa, Canada.

For more information about the workshop, FAQs, or to register, please click here or feel free to email me with any questions.

In all seriousness, I thank you for taking the time to read this verrrrrry long email but once I started writing, I just couldn't stop.

I sincerely hope you're taking advantage of the warm, beautiful weather while it's still here. And if you're experiencing even a tiny whisper of a voice telling you to make a change in your life, it's worth taking some time out to explore - even if it's just a short walk alone surrounded by nature! I already feel lighter and super excited about what the future holds.

I'd love to hear from you so hit "reply" to ask me a question related to graphic design, my upcoming workshop, or to ask about the books I read to help me along the rocky path to turning 40 with only briefly losing my mind :)

With design always in mind,
